Kirst Rabbitry : New Black Mini Rex

YAY I bought pedigreed rabbits for the first time in my life !! I got 3 new Mini Rex rabbits last thursday.

I’ll start with the black rabbit first. This here is “Starlight” a solid black code CCDDBB (?) she was born January 6th 2012 – I purchased her from a breeder who was downsizing their Rabbitry. She is bred to a Orange/Black Harlequin buck – code A_B_C_D_ejej enen and due on October 12th 2012. When I got her she was missing fur, but it’s growing in nicely.

I got the camera out yesterday morning and took some snap shots of my rabbits. I like to get them out of their hutches and on the table for some grooming time every week.

Since my last posting I bought 3 more rabbits Jill, Jack and Jean. Jean is the newest. I bought Jean from my boss’s son. Jill and Jack I bought at an auction a few towns south of me.

The rabbits I need for my color breeding project was recommended to me by Disney on the Rabbit Talk Forum I’m a member of .. although Jack was too cute to pass up when he moved past me on the auction line. Ha Ha

These are the colors suggested to me by Disney :  Rex or Mini Rex

Blue Tort

Black Tort

Red (non – extention)

Broken red

Harlequin

Broken Harlequin (tri-color)

He also mentioned a Charlie would be useful. Jean is the Charlie.

By the looks of things these rabbits are hard to find around here with Rex fur. I do have an appointment with a Rex breeder this weekend to purchase a Broken Tort doe and a Black doe both bred to a Harlequin buck.  Will see how that goes and what else she has.

Genotype = what genes the rabbit actually has or “alleles”

Phenotype = what does the genotype make the rabbit LOOK like.

So far I have these phenotypes (what the rabbit LOOKS like) for my future color breeding program.

I’m all new to this color ID, genotypes and phenotypes so if you see I made a mistake please correct me or I will continue with what I currently know. Untill I get smarter and correct myself. Ha Ha

I love my rabbits they are all so darling, I can’t wait till my son and I can go to the shows with our own rabbits .. that’s a long ways away though I must document everything for the next 4 generation with all of these rabbits in order to register them with pedigrees. YAY !!
