I decided to take my Standard Rex John after all. He is my favorite and the King of all rabbits around here. When I first bought him off Craigslist in July – I had every intention on taking him to a show. So I decided to not let him down.
He did rather well – all things considered.
He didn’t like the show cage I bought for him, he’s not used to staying in a cage of any sorts. But I did buy the second smallest at the vendor.
This is what John and I came home with after our first Rabbit Show.
I had so much fun !!
I’m looking forward to our next show – maybe by that time I can take one of CupCake’s babies !!
The Mini Rex baby bunnies are 8 weeks old and are successfully weaned from mom. I’ve determined there are 5 female and one male. The Cream colored bunny being the only male.
Not sure on the colors though (if you know for sure please leave a comment) they seem to keep changing as they get older. For the most part the cream, opal and red are staying the same .. it’s the other 3 that go threw color changes. I was told that’s the Agouti genes – you never know the final color till they molt their first coat around 5 – 8 months.
Here they are … whatcha think ?
Don’t forget to check out The Rabbit Hole Forums. Everyone welcome to talk Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits !!
This is a kit from the very first litter of my Breeding Project. I believe a male, but because I’m new to all this rabbit stuff – I could be wrong. I’m pretty sure Jade is a male though.
John (Black Otter) x Jill (Black Tort) = Jade aaB-C-D-Ee carries the rex gene.
This baby is friendly, used to being handled, not afraid of a dog or cat and loves to sit with us on the sofa. This baby bunny loves his people and knows the litterbox.
This bunny is listed on my For Sale page.
Ahh the Maniac Litter is growing up !!! I took some pictures again today. I play with them everyday on the table grooming and all and check to see if I can tell male from female yet.
This morning I noticed 3 of the bunnies (Little John is one of them) have smeared behinds. Like diarrhea or something but I don’t see any in the litter box. I cleaned them up but them don’t seem themselves all active and running around this morning. The 4th bunny is acting normal with no smeared behind. The only thing I can think of is last night for supper I made chicken noodle soup and while the bunnies were hanging out in the kitchen with me I gave them some celery bottoms, they didn’t eat it all but did eat some. I hope they are ok.
Here are some pictures of this morning. It appears Little John isn’t a Little John the more I check his privates, his parts are different than the other 3, I think he’s a girl.
How do they look ?
I also started The Rabbit Hole discussion forum – a place where beginners like me and experts can communicate, learn and teach one and other all about rabbits.
I decided to start The Rabbit Hole forums because I like to post pictures, video’s and just share everything about my rabbits and ask alot of questions. I noticed on some forums I’m either shunned or am considered a spammer with all my blog posts and pictures I share. I figure the only way to remedy this is to create a forum so I and others like myself can share all the pictures and video we like of our rabbits and of course to learn and communicate without hesitation.
Please consider joining The Rabbit Hole
Today John and Jill’s baby bunnies are 16 days old. They are growing nicely !!
They have their eyes wide open, nibbling on timothy hay and alfalfa and running circles around mom. I bought a 3 tier rabbit condo for inside the house that I figure I’d use for a housing and weaning area for the kits. I put a litter box in there to get them used to using a litter box. Of course they can only use the bottom of the condo for now so limiting space keeps them going back to the same spot to pee and poo.
I do have some interesting news about Jill and John – I now know Jill is a Mini Rex cross because breeding her to John who is a Standard Rex – she had 2 baby bunnies that have rex fur and 2 non-rex fur. So, she does carry the rex gene.
I did the Punnett Square on Jill and John to see what genotype their kits are – my conclusion on genotype is this aaB-C-D-Ee for John and Jill’s 4 baby bunnies.
Here is what the Punnett Square dictates when breeding John to Jill. Although both loci in the B,C,D is still unknown for both Jill and John. You can see what the babies genotype is with what we do know about John and Jill.
I only have genotype for John and Jill’s visible phenotype : Please correct me if I’m wrong, still learning here. The only thing I do know about the genotype is that John and Jill’s 4 kits will be all carrying non-extension. “Ee” Also, if John and Jill ever give birth to Torts then I can add in “e” on John’s genotype. Same with if any dilutes show up, then I can go back and add one dilute “d” to both John and Jill’s genotype.
They are BB so Black no chocolate.
They are CC so full color, not chinchilla.
They are DD so full strength of color. So no dilute.
They are Ee so full extension of color.
Small “a” denotes self. John’s “a” loci are known because he is an Otter so he carries two small “a”s at least one will have the attached “t”. Going by what I have written on the square for John and Jill, their babies will be dense (black based) Selfs, Otters, Torts (black non extension) and most likely Tort Otters. Although, John and Jill didn’t have Otters, Torts or Tort Otters. There are however still many unknowns there such as whether there is dilute in the “D” loci, whether John has two non-extension or only one in the “E” loci.
For me to fill in the unknown in John and Jill’s Punnett Square – John being an Otter, I would need to breed him to a Chocolate, something dilute, something REW or with REW to see what else is on John’s B_C_D_ locus.
Again, I’m learning all this so if you see I have made a wrong conclusion or mistake, please leave me a comment. It would be appreciated.
I took some pictures of them on day 14. So darling !!
Today Jill and John’s kits are 11 days old and doing very well. I took some pictures of them individually yesterday.
At this point I think (not sure this is all new to me) there are 3 boys and one girl. The smallest and my favorite being the girl. I will probably not know for sure till they are 6 or so weeks old but to inspect and guess is for when picking out names for my Rabbitry Records.
I would like to pick at least one for the Show coming up in February 2013, see where my first litter of bunnies takes me in the Judges eyes.
Beings these two parents John and Jill are not pedigreed – this litter of bunnies will be the first generation listen on my Rabbitry Records and the start of my 4 generation pedigree for this bloodline. This is so exciting !!
Here are some pictures of the Maniac litter – how do they look ? They are 10 days old in these pictures I took yesterday.
